Biographical / Historical
In 1991, "Deep Blue Something" was founded by Todd and Toby Pipes, students at the University of North Texas. John Kirtland joined as the drummer and Clay Bergus joined as the guitarist for the alternative rock band. The band originally performed as Leper Messiah, getting this name from a line from David Bowie's song Ziggy Stardust.
Todd and Toby Pipes are both from Huntsville, Texas, and were the sons of Gene Pipes, a former Huntsville City manager. Todd Pipes was born November 9, 1967, and Toby Pipes was born June 28, 1971. They both attended Huntsville High School and Todd went to Sam Houston State University before going to the University of North Texas for another degree with his brother, Toby.
Clay Bergus left the band before they recorded their first album but later rejoined in late 1995. Kirk Tatom was the guitarist during the time Clay was gone.
The band's most famous song, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made them a one-hit-wonder due to its immense success and lack of activity after its release. The band produced four albums, "11th Song, Home, Byzantium, and Deep Blue Something." After the release of their fourth album in 2001 the band drifted apart.
On June 29, 2015, the band released an EP titled "Locust House."
Todd and Toby Pipes are music producers and have their own three-studio facility, Bass Propulsion Laboratories, located in Dallas, Texas. They have both earned Best Producer from Fort Worth Weekly three years in a row and have been highlighted in Mix Magazine, a leading music industry magazine. Todd released a solo album, "Taurus Petals" on November 25, 2008. As well as two EPs, "Polar Patterns" on September 25, 2012, and "Mainsail to Skyking" on August 3, 2018. Toby formed the band "The Hundred Inevitables" and a new band "Little Black Dress" in 2005. His new band was the first to sign with Exploding Plastic Records, a new Idol Records sub-label and released their debut album in June 2009.
