Biographical / Historical

University Library:

The University Library was completed in 1968 and was built to deal with the overflow of books from Estill Library. In 1985, the University Library was dedicated to Newton Greshman, a Board of Regents member, a Distinguished Alumnus, and an SHSU benefactor, as the Newton Greshman Library (also known as NGL).

From 1937 until 2002, the Department of Library Science was a part of the library. It was then moved to the new Academic Building Four (AB4) along with the Student Advisement and Mentoring Center (also known as The SAM Center, located in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences building), which had been in the library since 1991. After this, the library underwent renovations to reincorporate the new vacated space, which was completely in 2003. During this time, 2003-2004, the University Archives moved from the Peabody Memorial Library to a section of the fourth floor of the NGL.

During the Board of Regents meeting on February 13-14, 2020, renovation for the library's entryways and first and second floors were approved. One of the goals of this construction was to integrate the University's Academic Success Center into the first floor. Construction for this multi-million dollar renovation, the largest the library had seen since it first opened, started in the Spring of 2020 in the mists of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Two celebrations were held for the Grand Re-Opening of the Newton Gresham Library. The first, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, was held on September 1, 2021, hosted by the library and the President's Office, and joined by the University President Alisa White, Provost Michael T. Stephenson, Executive Director of the Library Eric Owen, and Executive Director of the Academic Success Center Mary Catherine Breen. The ceremony concluded with group tours of the newly renovated areas and t-shirts to commemorate the re-opening of NGL. The second celebration was held on September 2, 2021, for students to see the newly renovated areas, and learn about the library's new services.

Math and Foreign Languages Building:

The Math and Foreign Languages Building opened on February 2, 1967. With the 1980s came a push for the names of buildings to reflect the coursework taught within. As a result, the Math and Foreign Languages Building was renamed Academic Building 1 or AB1 in October 1987, as Math and Foreign Languages were now taught in another building.

Between the mid-1990s and early-2000s, AB1 was considered part of the College of Business Administration as they used the building for office overflow from the adjacent building, the Smith-Hutson Business Administration Building.

Academic Building 1 once housed the departments of political science and sociology, but is now home to the Department of Computer Science and SHSU Computer Services. The top floor of the building consists of a penthouse with a mechanical room.

In August 2012, the Music Therapy Clinic opened in room 201.

Business Economics Building:

In the 1960s, it became clear that the the School of Business Administration and Applied Arts needed its own building, and the Business and Economics Building was constructed in 1966 as a result.

In 1996, the Business Economics Building was renamed the Smith-Hutson Business Building.

In 2003, the Board of Regents approved plans for renovations, including an addition to the building, for around $8.3 million. Construction was completed two years later with a dedication to the addition on September 16, 2005.
