Biographical / Historical
Sam Houston State University's two gates were gifted to the university by the August class of 1934. The arches within the university's name were given by the May class of 1935.
The gate featured on this postcard was the main entrance to the college at the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and 20th Street for many years. Around 1970, entrance through the gate was closed and filled with concrete, placing a Sam Houston State University sign in the middle. The university is now accessible via street access.
In 2004, the gate's signage was replaced and updated. President Gaertner requested University Archivist Barbara Kievit-Mason to create a photo collage of the different entrance gates with a piece of the original gate within a glass cube. This memorial piece is in the President's Office Conference Room in the Bobby K. Marks Administration Building.
