From the Collection:

The Wilson Scrapbook and Materials Collection is comprised of a scrapbook, a box of glass slides, and a box of printed material related to the Wilson family of Walker County, Texas.

Box one contains a 16 page scrapbook consisting of of photographs, newspaper articles, and cards. Box two contains four photographic glass slides and one glass slide fragment. Box three is comprised of seventeen stickers, five cards, four invitations, four tags, three newspaper articles, two programs and a piece of program ephemera, two v-mail envelopes, a newsletter, and a postcard.

Biographical / Historical

J.R. Wilson Sr. was originally from Montgomery, Texas, and moved to Huntsville, Texas, when he was nine years old. Wilson served in the Civil War. He was active in a farm program in Walker County and a member of the Baptist Church. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

His sons are S.C. Wilson (a professor at Ssam Houston State Teachers College), J.R. Wilson, Jr. (Jimmie), and G.C. Wilson.

Page 9 orginally contained a green-matted black-and-white photograph of J.R. Wilson Sr. walking down the street. It was located on the left of the newspaper article "Pioneer Citizen Dies in Huntsville." On the back of the matte "J.R. Wilson Sr. Huntsville Texas" is written in cursive and black ink. The adhesive failed. It has been seperated for storage and preservation purposes.

Physical Description

Page 9 contains the newspaper article, "Pioneer Citizen Dies Thursday In Huntsville" is about J.R. Wilson Sr. who died on a Thursday at 5:44 pm (date not listed) at 89 years old. The article discusses his funeral services with a brief biography and his surviving sons, S.C. Wilson, J.R. Wilson, and G.C. Wilson. The page also contains a white envelope with a lock of brown hair and a Christmas gift tag from Nely to Rebecca inside.

Page 10 contains two black and white photographs. The first photograph is of a toddler playing with a dog in the front yard. The second photograph shows five males standing together outside.

There are three cards. Two of the cards are in envelopes addressed to Rebecca Wilson, wishing her a speedy recovery. One card is from Rebecca's "sixth-hour Spanish class," and the other is from Elizabeth Oliphiut. The third card is not in an envelope and is from the Builders class at the Methodist Church.

The business card belongs to the minister from First Christian Church in Huntsville, Texas, Edwin C. Boynton.
