These twelve documents constitute a significant collection of official materials relating to the history of Texas when Mexico was rebelling against the mother country Spain and subsequently found itself facing rebellion by its Texas Colonists. Bangs’ career as a printer is intimately involved with the development of Mexico’s independence from Spain’s and later, Texas’ independence from Mexico makes the known surviving pieces of immense value to historians.The ten-year time frame of these papers includes an announcement of the marriage of the King of Spain to a princess from Saxony, orders for the celebration of the swearing of the Constitution of Spain, an amnesty from the Emperor Iturbide extended to military personnel resisting the revolution, Iturbide’s proclamation establishing freedom of the press for the first time in the history of Mexico, and the decree providing for cooperation between Coahuila-Texas and the military according to the Plan of Jalapa.
