Scope and Contents

The scope of these materials ranges from 1951 to 1998 with the bulk of the materials from the 1950s.

The materials in this collection are made up of a "T" Letterman Jacket, an All Lone-Star Conference plaque, a football photograph of H.C. Muckleroy, SHSTC athletic towel, a handmade Sam Houston Bearkat pillow, a framed Old Main watercolor painting, an Old Main postcard, a SHSTC Baccalaureate Commencement Program, and a scrapbook filled with photographs and newspaper article clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Herbert Charles Muckleroy was born on October 22, 1931, in Pelly, Texas. His parents were Henry Albert “Sye” Muckleroy and Willie Lambert Muckleroy. He married Mary Kathrine Thomas who graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1961. Herbert and Mary Kathrine had two sons, Don and Mark. Their son Don was a 1981 graduate of Sam Houston State University and worked for Silsbee ISD as an Assistant Principal.

Herbert Charles Muckleroy attended Sam Houston State Teachers College from 1949 to 1955; he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Eduation in 1955. During Muckleroy’s time at SHSTC, he played football as a lineman. He lettered in football for the years 1948-1951. He was awarded the All Lone-Star Conference in 1949 and in 1951. He was a starter on the 1950 and 1951 football teams where they finished third in the Lone Star Conference both years. After graduating from SHSTC Muckleroy joined the army where he continued his football career.

In 1956, Muckleroy moved to Hardin County, Texas to start his career in education. For six years he was a teacher and basketball coach in Kountze, Texas where they were district champions. He then moved to to Nederland, Texas to coach for a year. In 1963, Muckleroy moved to Silsbee, Texas where he continued his teaching and coaching career for six years. After this, he became the principal at an elementary school in Silsbee for nine years, then three years as a principal at the jr. high, and lastly six years as a principal at the high school. Muckleroy later became a superintendent for the Silsbee ISD, and he served in this position for thirteen years.

After serving in education for thirty-seven years Muckleroy served on the Silsbee city council for six years before running for mayor. After winning the mayoral election, Muckleroy stayed on as mayor until 2018 serving in this position for a total of twelve years. After finishing his career as mayor, Muckleroy retired at the age of 87.

In 1998, Muckleroy was awarded Silsbee Citizen of the Year. Later in 2000, he was inducted into the Letterman Hall of Fame at Sam Houston State University. He and his wife Mary Kathrine Thomas were members of The Austin Society at SHSU along with being life members of the SHSU Alumni Association.

Herbert Charles Muckleroy died on May 14, 2020, in Silsbee, Texas at the age of 88.
