Biographical / Historical
This collection was assembled and donated by Dr. Joseph M. Kirkland, retired professor of English and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lamar State College in Orange, who gathered these items out of an interest in pipes and famous individuals who smoke pipes.
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were English professors at Oxford who were both known pipe smokers and wrote literature which often featured characters who smoked pipes.
