Biographical / Historical

Aubrey E. Skinner was born in Vernon, Texas on March 19, 1928 and raised in Kilgore. He was the first son of Hosea Emmitt and Johnnie Vera. He graduated from the Kilgore High School in 1945. In May 1947, Skinner graduated co-valedictorian from Kilgore Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree in chemistry. In September 1948, he graduated from North Texas State College with a Bachelor of Arts in library science. In 1951, Skinner found a career at the Mallete Chemistry Library at the University of Texas at Austin. He continued his education and obtained a Master of Library Science degree in 1977. He remained at the University of Texas until his death on July 6, 1985. The Aubrey E. Skinner Library Endowment was established in his honor.

Aubrey E. Skinner authored two books, Rowen County, 1973 and Texas Library History: A Bibliography, 1983. He also edited and co-authored other books, having been an expert on Texas history and library systems.
