Biographical / Historical

Mary E. Coburn (1934-2022) from Bedias, Texas, worked as a Sam Houston State University Property Manager from 1962 to 1994 when she retired after 32 years of service to the University. During her last few years as Property Manager, Coburn created a scrapbook highlighting historical information and unique aspects of Sam Houston State University’s culture, scope, and architecture.

Sam Houston State University (SHSU) traces its roots back to 1879 when it was established as Sam Houston Normal Institute in Huntsville, Texas. The institution was named after Sam Houston, a prominent figure in Texas history who served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. In 1923, the institution's name was changed to Sam Houston State Teachers College, reflecting its dedication to teacher education. Over the years, it continued to evolve and grow, becoming Sam Houston State College in 1965 and finally achieving university status in 1969, when it was renamed Sam Houston State University. Since then, SHSU has expanded its academic programs to include a wide range of disciplines beyond education, including business, criminal justice, fine arts, sciences, and more.

The Sam Houston State University yearbook, The Alcalde, was published for students from 1910 to 2007 and is a unique record of student life on campus. The Alcaldes provide countless images and depictions of SHSU’s general history, curriculum, and community sponsors.
