Biographical / Historical
On April 21, 1836, following the losses at the Alamo and Goliad, Texan soldiers launched a surprise assault on Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his army. Under the command of Texas General Sam Houston, they achieved victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, which effectively ended the Texas Revolution. The oil-on-canvas painting, The Surrender of Santa Anna, by artist William Henry Huddle, captures the scene from the morning of April 22, 1836. It shows the defeated Santa Anna, clad in the white trousers of a private, being presented to the wounded General Houston.
