Biographical / Historical
Designated by the American Legion Auxiliary, with support from Congress, National Poppy Day is held on the Friday before Memorial Day.
Poppy flowers took over areas in France and Belgium most affected my the lime enriched rubble left behind by World War I. Because of this, and a Poem by WWI Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, the Poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of American soldiers who fought and continue to fight for the country.
On National Poppy Day, citizens are asked to wear a red poppy on their person in rememberance of current and fallen veterans.
