Biographical / Historical
The Student Union Building, also called the SUB, had its groundbreaking on March 2, 1950. Before this, Austin Hall functioned as the students' social area.
In the 1960s, the Department of Music needed more space. In 1964, the Music Building was renamed Music 1, the Student Union Building became known as Music 2, and the Lowan Student Student took over as the hub for student activicties.
In 1987 came a push for building's names to reflect their disciplines. Since music was now taught in the new Fine Arts Building, Music 2 was temporarily renamed Academic Building 2, also known as AB2.
In June 2009, the Board of Regents approved the renaming of AB2 to the Margaret Lea Houston Building in honor of Margaret Lea Houston, Sam Houston's wife, for her contributions to Texas history.
