Biographical / Historical
Gibbs National Bank opened on January 14, 1890, in the downtown square of Huntsville, Texas. Before the bank opened, the Gibbs family provided banking services through the family mercantile business, which opened in 1841 (during this time. Texas was a republic until 1846) and was located on the streets of what is now known as Eleventh Street and Sam Houston Avenue. The newly formed bank was next door to the family's mercantile business.
In 1923, the bank's name changed to the First National Bank of Huntsville, which it is still known as. Today, the bank is still situated on Eleventh Street and Sam Houston Avenue and has been around for at least 123 years (1890 - 2023).
