Biographical / Historical
General Sam Houston died in 1863 and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas. Houston's original gravesite was decorated with a tall oval gravestone inside a white picket fence lot.
In 1911, his original gravestone was replaced with a ten-foot-high granite monument carved by Popeo Coppini. The monument depicts a bas-relief of Houston on horseback flanked by allegorical figures and a quote by Andrew Jackson, "The world will take care of Houston's fame." The back of the memorial provides a list of Houston's achievements.
