Biographical / Historical

Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women in education, was founded by Annie Webb Blanton and eleven other Texas women on May 11, 1929, at the University Faculty Women's Club in Austin. Kappa Gamma Delta was the original name for the society, but upon learning this name was used by an aeronautics society, it was changed and chartered under its present name on August 15, 1929. Within the first year, seventeen chapters formed, and by 1987 the society had over 3,000 chapters in all U.S. states and thirteen countries.

Blanton founded the organization as a means for women to counter discrimination in education and to give recognition for excellence. The society also aims to provide women with a sense of unity and cooperation, secure legislation supporting improvements in education, help women gain equal representation in professional organizations, and to provide financial assistance for women preparing for carers in education. The society also provides intellectual and financial support, a benefit added as the society grew.

At first, initiates were required to have a minimum of five years of experience in elementary, secondary, or postsecondary education, but was later changed to three years. The society has chapter, state, regional, and international bodies, with its governance and operation controlled by an executive board of 120 people. Every two years, Delta Kappa Gamma holds regional and international conventions. In 1964, the Delta Kappa Gamma Foundation established a source of grants, scholarships, and fellowships. The Foundation also supports educational projects such as providing a Navajo community college with a reading teacher.

The society publishes a quarterly "Bulletin," a periodic newspaper called "News," and numerous brochures and pamphlets.

Delta Kappa Gamma's national headquarters are in Denton, Texas, with their international headquarters in Austin, Texas.
