Bibliography

Margaret Elizabeth “Bettie” Hayman was born in Huffman Creek in San Jacinto County, Texas, July 5, 1891. The daughter of James Wesley Hayman and Sarah Celeta Shirley Hayman.

Sarah Hayman was widowed in 1893 and left with Bettie and her three granddaughters after her daughter and son-in-law died in 1920.

Bettie attended Sam Houston Normal Institute from 1914-1916 and received her 2nd year certification and her 1st year normal school certificate. After the death of her sister and brother-in-law, Bettie told her mother she wanted to finish her education at Sam Houston Normal Institute.

Sarah decided to move to Huntsville, Texas, with all the girls so they could all attend Sam Houston Normal Institute. Once in Huntsville Sarah opened a boarding house for students who attended Sam Houston Normal Institute which soon was renamed Sam Houston State Teachers College.

In June of 1921, Bettie received her 1st year normal college certificate and in August of 1921, she graduated with her diploma and permanent Texas teaching certificate. In June of 1928 she received her B.S. degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College.

She would go on to teach in Huntsville and Walker County, Texas schools for nearly her entire teaching career.

She never married but did extensive church work for 1st Baptist Church and University Baptist Church in Huntsville. She died on December 8th, 1970.
