Biographical / Historical

Jesse Kinard Burke was born in 1872 to Samuel Dillard Burke and Temintia Webb.

Burke was a member of Sam Houston Normal Institute's graduating class of 1896-1897.

After graduating from SHNI, Burke taught at least a summer session at an institute for teachers (possibly in Brownwood, Texas-evidence by a typed label on the back of a photograph in the collection). Along with teaching at the institute for teachers, Burke taught and later became the principal of the grade school in the same town.

Burke later moved to Ringgold, Texas, and became the superintendent of the schools. Here, Burke met his future wife, Catherine (Kate) Grinnan, and they had a daughter named Margaret, who was born on December 7, 1902and died on October 8, 1983.

Jesse Kinard Burke died in 1956 after his wife Catherine, 80, died on January 7, 1953, in Lubbock, Texas. They are buried together in Resthaven Memorial Park, Lubbock, Texas, where their daughter is also buried.
