Biographical / Historical

Theda Batson McConnico (1926-2013) from Normangee, Texas, graduated from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College (SHSTC), now Sam Houston State University, in 1946 with a bachelor’s in business administration. During her time at SHSTC, Theda was a member of Glee Club, Business Administration Club, and Meachum Music Club. She also played in the Bearkat Band as a twirler, and All-Girl Orchestra as an accordionist and vocalist. Much of her collection is related to her time with the All-Girl Orchestra and SHSTC.

The Sam Houston State Teachers College All-Girl Orchestra operated from 1942 to 1946, providing a platform for student musicians during a turbulent period. Established in September 1943 under the direction of SHSTC band director Dr. Clint R. Hackney and Eileen Wooten, the orchestra was a response to the disbandment of the All-Boys Orchestra, The Houstonians, in 1942, due to male students enlisting in WWII. The All-Girl Orchestra performed at a wide array of venues, including high schools, Army and Navy bases, hospitals, outdoor theaters, and the Huntsville Prisoner of War Camp. Their repertoire encompassed various genres, from big band to jazz and swing. In addition to musical performances, their shows featured solo vocalists, comedy skits, twirlers, and drum majors, offering a diverse and engaging entertainment experience for audiences.
