The collection was purchased for SHSU Special Collections in June 2019. Each flyer was signed in Huntsville, Texas by Searcy Baker, Superintendent of the Texas State Penitentiaries during the earlyb1900s. There are a total of 35 flyers, one being a duplicate.

This collection contains surveys of the historic resources of Huntsville, Texas in September of 1992. It also contains a project book of slides of Huntsville resources and statements of significance of high priority properties.

This collection contains materials on the history and development of Huntsville, Texas, from its early beginnings in the 19th century up to the 21st century. It contains newspaper clippings, copies of book chapters, publications, photographs, and personal correspondence.

Many photographs within the collection have been acquired by former Special Collections Librarians. The items in this collection represent Jane Howe Gregory’s extensive research into the Texas Penitentiary system, primarily focusing on issues surrounding female inmates. Journal articles, class notes, and prison records are the most common types of materials in this collection. Prison statistics and prison reforms pertaining to female prisoners are the most common themes.

The materials in this collection consist of photographs, letters, college notes and notebooks, a short college diary, instructional books, college certificate, and diplomas belonging to Jewell Phillips Herzog.

A large portion of the collection consists of correspondence in the form of letters between Jewell and a college friend, Ray L. Alexander.

This collection contains a bibliography of Johnnie Jo Dickenson’s work, as well as Huntsville Item newspaper articles written by and about Dickenson and pertinent publications.
