Biographical / Historical

Huntsville, Texas was founded in 1835 by Pleasant Gray. He traveled from Huntsville, Alabama and settled in Texas on the divide of the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers. The likeness of the land compared to his hometown inspired the name. He built two cabins, one to house his growing family and the other as a trading post. Soon others followed suit, through the help of posted advertisements in Huntsville, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Huntsville Walker County Photographs Collection is composed of photographs of various subjects throughout Walker County, primarily Huntsville, Texas. The collection consists of one medium flat box, with 45 folders.
