Biographical / Historical
Huntsville, Texas was founded in 1835 by Pleasant Gray. He traveled from Huntsville, Alabama and settled in Texas on the divide of the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers. The likeness of the land compared to his hometown inspired the name. He built two cabins, one to house his growing family and the other as a trading post. Soon others followed suit, through the help of posted advertisements in Huntsville, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. More information on the history of Huntsville and Walker County, Texas can be found in Huntsville & Walker County, Texas: A Bicentennial History (F392.W24H94) located in the Thomason Room at Newton Gresham Library.
