The majority of this collection contains materials from the Sam Houston State University KSHU Radio Station. Other materials include a Sam Houston State College Homecoming football program, Delta Zeta photocopied articles, an Alpha Phi Sigma certificate, paper materials from Sam Houston State University (event tickets and the College of Arts and Media magazine), and materials about the City of Huntsville.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Bobby Kees Marks earned his bachelor's from Lamar University, his master's from the University of North Texas, and his doctorate from the University of Arkansas. In 1960, Dr. Marks joined Sam Houston State Teachers College as a business management faculty member. In 1968, he was promoted to Professor of Management.

Dr. Marks later became Dean of the College of Business Administration and served in this role for fifteen years. During his time as dean, he achieved college status for the School of Business and Applied Arts as well as implemented the division of the college into two separate colleges: the College of Business Administration and the College of Applied Arts and Sciences. Within the college, Marks implemented the business/economics program, increased student majors from 1,800 to 2,600, increased the faculty from nineteen to fifty-four, and initiated an annual Honors Convocation to recognize student achievement.

After serving as the Dean of the College of Business Administration, Dr. Marks served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs for eleven years. As vice president, Dr. Marks implemented a new core curriculum and a new student recruitment plan while raising admissions standards. He established the University Honors Program, Across-the-University Writing Program, and the Excellence in Research and Excellence in Service awards. He also established the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which oversees many projects, including the Texas Regional Institute for Environmental Studies which has attracted more than $17 million in funded research since 1991.

On October 16, 1995, Dr. Marks served as Interim President of the University until his appointment to the presidency on June 4, 1996. Dr. Marks is the eleventh President of Sam Houston State University serving in this role for six years until his retirement in 2001.

Dr. Marks was named President Emeritus and the Administration building was renamed in his honor as the Bobby K. Marks Administration Building. The City of Huntsville named a street in his honor, Bobby K. Marks Drive which runs through the SHSU campus.

Dr. Bobby Kees Marks died on Sunday, March 7, 2021, at the age of 86 in Huntsville, Texas.
