This collection is composed of Eugene Davidson Priest's teachers certificates and a diploma from Sam Houston Normal Institute, torn-out pages of the 1922 Sam Houston Normal Institute featuring the Dramatic Club, and a manila folder with Priest's military rank.

Biographical / Historical

Eugene Davidson Priest was a member of the Dramatic Club at Sam Houston Normal Institute.

Harriet Smith was one of the Directors of the Dramatic Club at Sam Houston Normal Institute. Smith was the head of the geography department and taught freshman English, Spanish, and high school physiology, and oversaw the Institute's orchestra. In 1915, she composed the words and music to the class song and taught the graduating class the piece to be performed during their commencement. Overseeing Sam Houston Drama, she developed a trilogy of plays based on General Sam Houston's life- Houston the Young Man, Houston the President of the Republic, and Houston in the Civil War Period- performed by the senior class. After this, the plays were written by the English class studying drama and were performed by the College Dramatic Club. Harriett also served as a faculty sponsor for the student newspaper, The Houstonian.

Lucy Jane Dabney taught English and Spanish at Sam Houston Normal Institute.
