Scope and Contents

The Texas Centennial Collection (1934-1937; 11 boxes) contains newspapers from various Texas newspapers in celebration of 100 years of Texas independence. This collection is primarily comprised of newspaper clippings and press releases. There are newspaper clippings, as well as full editions of local Texas newspapers. There is a large number of press releases from the Texas Centennial Commission chronicling the different events surrounding the Texas Centennial celebration in 1936-1937. The Texas Centennial was officially celebrated in 1936, marking 100 years of independence from Mexico. The idea for this celebration originated from James Hogg and later saw a formation of the Texas Centennial Commission in 1934 and other organizations in charge of local celebrations. The city of Dallas won the bid for being the host city, outbidding Houston and San Antonio. There were statewide celebrations that began in 1935, taking the form of pageants, carnivals and other festive ceremonies. This collection was put together by the previous Special Collections Librarians of SHSU with donations from J.L. Clark, Martinus Stogaard and others.
