From the Collection:

The materials in this box are made up of personal photographs, a Sam Houston Normal Institute panoramic class photograph, a newspaper article clipping, SHNI Manual Training Building postcard, S.R. Warner's progress report on his research about plant foods for quail in Southeast Texas, two German language related books, and S.R. Warner's diploma and license of instruction from the College of William and Mary.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Carroll Tharp taught biology with S.R. Warner at Sam Houston Normal Institute from 1917-1919 and became the second full-faculty member of this discipline.

Tharp was born in Pankey, Texas (the town no longer exists and was a part of Grimes County) on November 16, 1885. He graduated from SHNI in 1909 and was awarded his Master of Arts in Botany from the University of Texas in 1915. He left SHNI to earn his PhD in botany at the University of Texas. After he was awarded his PhD in 1925, he stayed on at UT to teach botany until his retirement in 1959.

Physical Description

"Grace [,] Mrs. Tharp [,] Tharp [,] Roeman [,] M.J. [,] Mrs. Roeman" are written on the border at the bottom of the black and white photograph in cursive and black ink. "Mrs E. 1921" is written on the back of the photograph in cursive and black ink. The group is standing and sitting on the porch of S.R. Warner's apartment housing.
