This collection is composed of a reproduced photogrpah, typed letters between Margaret Percival and Barbara Kievit-Mason, a type-up of Jessie McFarland's letter, typed biograohical information about Jessie McFarland by Margaret Percival, and newspaper article clippings about Sam Houston State Teachers College.

Biographical / Historical

Bertha Kirkley was one of Margaret Percival's mother's teachers at Sam Houston State Teachers College. Margaret's mother's name is not mentioned, but believed to be Elsie Penfield-the daughter of Jessie McFarland.

Physical Description

There are two separate newspaper article clippings.

The first newspaper article, "Funeral For Miss Kirkley Is Wednesday," was published on August 16. The article provides information of how Bertha Kirkley passed away and when her funeral services are. Underneath the article is "one of mother's friends" in cursive and blue ink.

The second newspaper article, "Huntsville Teacher, 81, Recalls Icicles in Whiskers of Pen Fire Fighters," is from The Houston Chronicle and was published on Sunday, February 13, 1949. The article interviews Bertha Kirkley about her time as a student at Sam Houston Normal Institute and then as a teacher at Sam Houston State Teachers College. The article also provides several memories of Bertha Kirkley's time in Huntsville and spending four months in Europe.
